About this camp

The Duke University - ODE Summer Design Camp offers high school students an immersive five-week biomedical engineering design experience. Participants learn and apply the engineering design process to solve real-world problems through a series of hands-on design workshops, labs, and innovation sessions. Students gain practical skills in identifying problems, developing solutions, and transforming ideas into finished prototypes. The program emphasizes active application of theory, allowing students to uncover biomedical needs and create prototype biomedical devices. Previous projects have included a water filtration system for low-resource settings and a thermal monitor for early diaper rash detection. Students also learn about technological tools like basic circuit building, rapid prototyping using laser cutters, and 3D printers. The camp culminates in final presentations where students showcase their projects to family members and local experts.

What a typical day looks like

On Monday through Thursday each week, students participate in design workshops, labs, lectures, guest speakers, and innovation sessions, applying conceptual knowledge to real-world biomedical problems.
