Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics is a no-cost, state-funded residential program designed for academically talented North Carolina high school students interested in STEM careers. Participants engage in university-level STEM research, working closely with faculty and master teachers on collaborative projects. The program emphasizes hands-on activities in labs and in the field, allowing students to gain skills in experimental design, laboratory instrumentation, mathematical modeling, problem-solving, data analysis, and scientific communication. Students will complete a research project, culminating in a written scientific paper and an oral presentation of their findings. An online Research Prep course is provided to help students prepare for university-level research by teaching them how to find, understand, and read research papers. The curriculum is designed to enrich and complement college preparation through experiences not typically available in high school, fostering a deeper understanding of STEM concepts and potential career paths.
A typical day involves breakfast, followed by classes and research from approximately 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with a break for lunch. After classes, students have free time until dinner, with optional evening and weekend social, recreational, and enrichment activities organized by residential staff.
