SMILE Camp provides 100% hands-on education in science and math, teaching the science behind fun activities and inspiring a lifelong passion for STEAM fields.
SMILE Camp offers hands-on education in science and math, encouraging campers to explore various STEM topics through engaging activities. The camp focuses on learning by doing, with campers participating in multiple labs each day, each accompanied by a project or reaction to lead. Activities include exploring concepts in chemistry, physics, biology, and computer design, such as working with liquid nitrogen, petri dishes, clock reactions, storm glasses, edible spherification, calorimetry, liquid crystals, and an introduction to 3D printing. Campers gain practical skills in scientific experimentation, critical thinking, and problem-solving. The program aims to expose students to college-level and real-world applications of STEM, fostering a deeper interest in these fields beyond the traditional classroom setting. Campers also develop friendships with like-minded peers and mentors, creating, designing, building, and bringing home their creations.
A typical day at SMILE Camp includes regular drop-off between 8:00-8:30 a.m., followed by experiment time from 8:30-10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m., with a snack and team-building activity in between. After lunch and activity time from 12:00-1:00 p.m., campers engage in more experiment time from 1:00-2:30 p.m. and 3:00-4:30 p.m., with another snack break. Normal pick-up is from 4:30-5:00 p.m.
The ideal student for SMILE Camp is one who is academically/intellectually gifted and eager to explore real science through hands-on experimentation alongside intellectual peers.
